It has been told that in a small section of Scotland, there were many families bearing the name Cummingham, some of them not closely relatedto others. To distinguish among the various families, they werereferred to by such circumstances as residence on a hill or beside thewoods. Thus, our branch became the Woodside Cunninghams, and finallythe Woodsides. While our immigrant ancestor, Samuel Woodside, never signed his name with the middle name of Cunningham on documents, most members of thefamily refer to him as Samuel Cunningham Woodside. Samuel Woodside came from Ireland to South Carolina under very difficult circumstances in 1768 aboard the ship "Nancy", with his wifeand 2 children. He lost his whole family as a result of the unhealthyliving conditions aboard the ship, but married again to raise a newfamily of 5 sons and 5 daughters. On 1790 census, Camden District, Chester County, South Carolina Woodside, Samuel C #R11833 b. 1737 d. 22 July 1819 m. 1 __________ 2 Jane ______ October 1768 While residing in Chester District, he enlisted and served under Capts Michael Dickson, Adams, Col. Lacey and Gen. Sumter. He was in the SnowCampaign and the Florida Campaign. Although, he was taken prisoner atthe fall of Charleston, he was in the battles at Fish Dam Ford andBlackstock's Plantation. Patriot Index Supplement.
