File #S3556 - State of Ohio, Miami County, second day of May, 1833 SAMUEL WILEY of county of Miami, State of Ohio, aged seventy six years. He entered the service of the US and served as herein stated: He was born on the 16th March 1757 in Cecil County State of Maryland (record in Bible formerly owned by his father and now in his possession). He emigrated with his father to Cumberland County, PA in 1772. He entered the service of US as volunteer on 25 Dec 1776, and served three months in New Jersey, in Captain Gibson's company, Col Johnston's Reg. General Putnam, several skirmishes in NJ, but no general engagement, one of which was with a detachment of the British Army in Somerset County, NJ. General Putnam's camp at Princeton and General Washington's headquarters at Morristown during the time served in New Jersey. He was discharged in Mar 1777, but no written evidence of the fact in his possession. He was drafted in the PA militia in April 1778 served a tour of two months as private in Captain Mintears Company and joined General Potter's brigade at the Valley Forge, Chester County PA under the command of General Washington and that he remained there until discharged - no written evidence. Served two months under Capt McClelland in Col Purdy's Reg in the fall of 1781 (he thinks) against the Indians in Bedford Co. PA. Frequently volunteered, subsequently to above, as a frontier scout against the Indians, under various leaders, and suffered many privations at the time. The three tours aforesaid he served the full term of seven months. No documentary evidence. When first entered service he resided in Cumberland County in PA - continued to reside in said County until Spring of 1812 when he removed to County of Miami where he has ever since resided. ---Test. to by James Harrison, Clergy in the Presby.
