"845. Capt. Samuel5 Welles (Thaddeus4, Samuel II3, Hon. & Capt. Samuel2, Gov. Thomas1), born circa 1728 in Glastonbury, Connecticut; and died 29 December 1800 in Glastonbury (Barbour citing VR 2:80), at age 72, buried in Green Cemetery, Glastonbury (Hale 13). … Samuel was a Deacon in the First Congregational Church, Glastonbury (HH 497) [797].

He began his service in the Revolutionary War as a Lieutenant in the 4th company, 6th Connecticut regiment under Capt. Jonathan Hale. He later became Captain of the 7th Company, Col. Fisher Gay's 2nd Battalion, Wadsworth's Brigade. He was taken prisoner in the retreat from Turtle Bay in lower New York City on 15 September 1776 and was released in June 1778 (Conn. Men 396, 628).

Samuel Wells of Glastonbury filed an administrator's bond on the estate of Samuel Wells of Glastonbury on 4 February 1801, with Joseph Wells as surety. An inventory, taken by George Winslee and William C. Hatch in May 1801 came to $709.20 but a later addition brought the total to $831.43. The inventory lists 5 acres of land by Salmon Brook worth $375 (but no dwelling house), a small number of cattle and a sorrel horse. Charges against the estate came to $696.87. The remainder went to the widow as a share of household furniture (Hartford Probate District, Connecticut Estate Files, no docket number, filed alphabetically as Samuel Welles, dated 1801)."
