    During the U. S. Civil War, Dr. Van Wyck served as a surgeon in a cavalry regiment organized and commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Nathan Bedford Forrest (1821-1871), who rose to the rank of lieutenant general during the war. While serving in the army, Samuel Maverick Van Wyck was killed by a Kentucky backwoodsman on November 30, 1861. At his death, the surgeon was twenty-six years of age.

    His wife was Margaret C. Broyles Van Wyck (1834-1923), daughter of Charles Edward Broyles and Lucy (Johnson) Broyles. ....
