DEATH: Rev. Solomon Townsend of Barrington, Rhode Island His Ancestors and Descendants By Robert W. Townsend Family History Publishers Bountiful,Utah August 1997 Page 84 - 85 The Bristol Phenix 7 June 1862 Sudden Death

On Tuesday forenoon last, Mr. Samuel J. Townsend, of this town, while standing at the head of Foster's wharf, Boston, having just landed from the Portland boat, suddenly fell to the ground and instantly expired. Coroner Sanborn was called and the body, by the advice of friends of the deceased, conveyed to the office of the City Undertaker on Howard St.
Mr. Townsend had been for a long time in feeble health, and his friends were in some measure prepared for the sad new. He was the son of the late Nathaniel Townsend, Esq., and was in the 46th year of his age. He leaves three children to mourn the loss of a father to whom they were most tenderly attached, their mother having died some four years since.
Mr. T. had been connected with a New York firm for a length of time as a traveling agent, and was extensively known and respected among the business men of most of the places in the country.
In private life Mr. Townsend was a kind and affectionate parent, a loving brother, a sincere, warm and self-sacrificing friend, a genial companion and a good citizen. Those who knew him best loved him most. His funeral was solemnized at the residence of his father-in-law on Washington street, Providence, yesterday afternoon, and the remains deposited by the side of his wife in Swan Point Cemetery.
Truly in the midst of life we are in death, and never was it brought more forcibly to our mind than this dispensation of Providence in the removal by death of a warm personal friend, one whom we ever esteemed most highly, May God comfort and sustain by His grace the family and friends in their bereavement.
