  4. There are two cousins named Samuel Thayer born five years apart that seem to often be confused. According to MF5G, Vol. 20, p. 29, it is the son of Thomas, b. 1696, that marries Mary Sampson. Mendon records show the marriage 13 Aug 1716 of Samuel Thayer to Mary Sampson. She would be d/o Stephen, a named used for one of their sons by Samuel and Mary Thayer of Mendon. The will in 1764 shows the son of Thomas has a wife Mary plus several children, including Stephen, who is made the residuary legatee.

However, plenty of sources give differing answers.

Source:Thayer, Elisha. Family Memorial : Genealogy of Fourteen Families of the Early Settlers of New England, of the Names of Alden, Adams, Arnold, Bass,, shows the two cousins, Samuel Thayer, both marrying women named Mary. Samuel Thayer [#127, p. 146], s/o Samuel, b. 1691, is shown marrying Mary Sampson with no children listed, while Samuel Thayer [#115, p. 144], s/o Thomas, b. 1696 is shown marrying Mary --- with the children named in the 1764 will. Only the one marriage record is found so the basis for the other marriage is unknown.

Source:Thayer, Bezaleel. Memorial of the Thayer Name, from the Massachusetts Colony of Weymouth and Braintree, Embracing Genealogical and Biographical, p. 316, shows the Samuel, s/o Samuel b. 1691 [its #2196], m. 13 Mar 1716 Rachel Aldrich. On p. 285, it shows the Samuel, s/o Thomas b. 1696 [Its #1979] m. 1719 Mary Thayer who it says was b. 1735 and daughter of this Samuel's brother David, i.e., his niece! Clearly the marriage to Mary Thayer is incorrect.

Source:Tingley, Raymon Meyers. Some Ancestral Lines : Being a Record of Some of the Ancestors of Guilford Solon Tingley and His Wife, Martha Pamelia (Sic), p. 12, say Rachel Aldrich married Samuel, s/o Thomas, b. 1696 who d. 1764. We know this is the wrong Samuel because the will names the wife as Mary and names his father as Thomas. Whether Rachel Aldrich married one of the Samuel Thayers is open to question as no records have been found, and some secondary sources show Tingley's Rachel Aldrich, d/o Jacob Aldrich and Huldah Thayer, b. 1694, marrying Samuel White.
