Samuel was the principal of the Kadina Primary school from 1873 - 1875 when he transferred to Moonta. He came back to Kadina in early 1878 and was principal again from 1879 to 1885. He was appointed as headmaster of the Moonta school 1st of May, 1886 (Education Gazette Vol 2 No 2 Apr 1886)
