Samuel enlisted as a Private in Pennsylvania Volunteers 61st Infantry Regiment Company E on August 1, 1861. He was assigned as a musician. Samuel was wounded at the Battle of Fair Oaks near Richmond, Virginia on May 31,1862.  He died 3 June, 1862 from his wounds. "Pvt. Samuel E. Stiteler was buried June 19, 1862 at a site near Shockoe Hill Cemetery.  He was one of hundreds of Union prisoners and casualties buried at this location.  In 1866-67, those Union soldiers buried at this location were re-interred in the Richmond National Cemetery in east Richmond.  Their graves are marked as "unknown".  Samuel E. Stiteler's name is misspelled as "Samuel E. Staten"on the memorial marker at Schokhoe Hill placed in 2002 at the original burial site".[From bio by Darlene Stiteler Hightower].
