_DCAUSE: Heart Disease Samuel Poland Squires was nicknamed "Poland." He was employed as a farmer and a miller. For a number of years, he was proprietor of the old Conley Mill on Decker's Creek and the Fortney Mill at Independence. He was Republican and attended the Methodist Church. He was living in Lyon District in 1880. (U.S. Census) (Joy Gilchrist) He is buried in the Union Cemetery, near Independence, WV. In 1860, Poland Squires owned 131 acres of land known as "Mount Phebe (Pheby)" along Three Fork Creek, 5 miles West of Kingwood. On 2/3/1868, he and wife Ann sold a portion of their land to Poland's brother, Asa D. Squires. This was the above-noted land called "Mount Pheby." (Land Deeds Book 29, page 253) References
