- 1790 United States Census
Series: M637 Roll: 5 Page: 274.
The 1790 census was the first U.S. census and was very simple. It asked for name of the family head, number of free white males above 16 years old, number of free white males under 16, number of free white females, number of slaves, number of other persons, and sometimes town or district of residence. Keep in mind that only two-thirds of these census records survived because the census takers only task with the original census return was to post it in two public places in his area, so if they were damaged, stolen, or neglected, the results were gone forever.
