Facts and Events
Sam served in the Civil War as a corporal in the 90th Ohio Voluntary Infantry under General Thomas. His discharge record shows he took part in a number of battle, including Chapel Hill, Kentucky, Stone River, Tennessee, Tunnel Hill; Rocky Fall, Dalton Resaca, Atlanta, Lovejoy, Georgia, Franklin, & and Nashville. When he returned from the war he went to Leipsic, Putnam County, Ohio where many of his cousins had gone. There he married Elizabeth Andrews. About 1873 or 1874 they moved to Westphalia, Anderson County, Kansas. Sam helped to organize and build a United Brethren Church known as Cherry Mound. He served as pastor for some time. After the death of his parents, he and Elizabeth moved to Yates Center, Kansas, where Sam owned a hotel and later a boarding house. Fairfield County, Ohio, 1870 census:[2]
