Russel, Samuel - entered service 1780 in Virginia Regiment; granted Pension 1818 in Rockbridge County, Virginia; resided there in 1822 abt. age 61 when he had wife abt. age 56, son abt. age 19 & son abt. age 14 per County Court Clerk Andrew Reid; died there 7/26/1831; married there (2) 10/4/1827 to Hannah Flint by Reverend Samuel Houston; widow granted Pension there in 1853 abt. age 66, per witnesses Andrew Williams, James Leckey & C. Barret; granted Bounty Land Warrant #8253 there in 1858 abt. age 71, per witnesses Charles Campbell & William Hull, County Justice of the Peace Andrew Lindsay & county Court Clerk Charles Chapin; widow's son & only child Morgan A. abt. age 29 then, she was dec'd when Morgan gave power of attorney at Bolivar County, Missouri, 1881 to agent to apply for bounty land warrant; surname also spelled Rusell & Russell. Virginia At a Court held for Rockbridge County on Monday the 6 day of July 1818 On the motion of Samuel Russel, and it appearing to the satisfaction of the court from the affidavit of said Russel and the testimony of John Harris, that said Russel enlisted as a regular soldier in the Revolutionary army on or about the first of September 1780 for the term of eighteen months the whole of which time he served in the state of Virginia under Colo. [Thomas] Gaskins & the Baron Stuben [sic: Baron von Steuben], that he was enlisted by Lieutenant Beaty, served in the Companies of Capts. [Joseph] Scott & [John] Anderson and took the oath of enlistment before Colo. Bronaugh, that he obtained a regular discharge at the end of his term of enlistment, which he has long since lost, that he is verry poor and from his reduced circumstances he is in need of the assistance of his country for support. which is ordered to be certified to the Secretary of the department of war
Rockbridge County Court of Quarter Session To wit on this sixth day of March 1822 Samuel Russel personally appeared in open Court being a Court of record for the said County aged sixty one years resident in said County of Rockbridge who being first duly sworn according to Law doth on his oath declare that he served under Capt. [Valentine] Peyton, Scott & Anderson Colo Davis [sic: William Davies], General Barien Stuben for the term of eighteen months third Virginia regiment Virginia Line that he served the term of eighteen months in the regular service of the United States in the years 1780 & 1781. that he made his original declaration on or about the sixth day of July 1818 and received a pension certificate from the secretary of war of the United States dated 27 day of January 1819 Number 6014 and I Samuel Russel do solemnly swear that I was a resident citizen of the United States on the 18th of March 1818 that I have not since that time nor at any other time by gift sale or in any other manner disposed of my property or any part thereof with an intent thereby to diminish it so as to bring myself within the provisions of an Act of congress entitled an act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the revolutionary war passed the 18th of March 1818 that I have not nor any person in trust for me, any property or securities contracts or debts due to me nor have I any income other than what is contained in the schedule hereunto annexed and by me subscribed that I am a Labourer by profession but am unable by age and Infirmity to pursue it in such a manner as to maintain myself that I have a wife about fifty six years of age and two sons one about nineteen years of age and the other of fourteen years of age who are incapable of doing more than supporting themselves [Signed] Samuel Rusel Schedule of Porperty belonging to Samuel Russel March 6, 1822. 1 Blind horse aged about fifteen years 3 hogs no other property except wearing apperl and Beds & Bedding two in number. WIDOW’S CLAIM TO BOUNTY LAND. Act of March 3 1855 State of Virginia } SS. County of Rockbridge } On this 13 day of July A. D. 1858, personally appeared before me, a Justice of the Peace within and for the county and State aforesaid, Mrs. Hannah Russel aged 71 years, a resident of Rockbridge County, in the State of Virginia, who being duly sworn according to law, declares, that she is the widow of Samuel Russel, deceased, who was a Private in the company commanded by Captain Thomas Snead in the 9th Regt. Regiment of Virginia, Continental Es’tbl commanded by Col. Thomas Fleming in the war with Great Britain Revolutionary. That her said husband volunteered at Loudon [sic: Loudoun] County on or about the 15th day of February A. D. 1776, for the term of two years and continued in actual service in said war for the term of Two years and was honorably discharged at Valley Forge on or about the 15th day of February 1778, as will appear by the muster rolls of said company & her said husbands pension papers. She further states that she was married to the said Samuel Russel in Rockbridge County Virginia on the fourth day of October A. D., 1827, by one Samuel Houston, a presbyterian clergyman, and that her name before her marriage was Hannah Flint that her said husband died in Rockbridge County Virginia on the twenty sixth day of July 1831, that she is still a widow; and she further declares that she had by her said husband one child and the following is now living, viz: Morgan A. Russell [said to be about 29 elsewhere in the document] and that she has made no application for nor received any land warrant before this. She makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the bounty land, arrears of pay, half pay, three months’ extra pay, and other allowances to which she may be entitled under the various acts of Congress, pertaining thereto. NOTES: A size roll compiled at Chesterfield Courthouse after 1 Sep 1780 includes the following: Sam’l. Russell/ age 19/ height 5 7½/ planter/ born in Berkeley County/ residing in Loudoun County/ hair dark brown/ eyes gray/ complexion “Bk”/ enlisted 23 Sep 1780 for 18 months. “Deserted.” The obvious discrepancies between the statements by Samuel Russell and his widow appear not to have been questioned by the War Department. On 5 Sep 1853 and on 13 July 1858 Hannah Russell applied for pensions. On 14 Mar 1881 Morgan A. Russell of Bolivar MO applied for bounty land as heir of Samuel Russell whose widow had died.
