Moved to western NY about 1811. They were settled in the wilderness near Lake Erie close to Catheraugus Creek which was the boundary of the Indian reservation. Provisions were scarce and they were near starving. After planting potatoes, they had to dig them up and eat the seed after it sprouted. He left mother and baby Oscar with no food, and walked all day to try to obtain food. At dark, he stopped at his father's with about one quart of corn mea, which he divided with him. They were so hungry they ate it before it was half done. Mother at time took baby Oscar 12 miles on horseback to by a loaf of bread. - Dr. Mortimer Nevins. Samuel served in the War of 1812. 1846 Moved to Laport, Indiana. |
