Notes on the Mehorter surname: From Black's "Surnames of Scotland" - originally from the Scottish surname MacChruiter. The name originated from the occupation of cruiteir, or harper, which was often a hereditary occupation in the Highlands. The modern Scottish form of the name, MacWhirter, is currently used in Ayreshire, the original home of the name. In North Ireland, the name became Mewhirter. Samuel's descendants in the United States mainly used the Mehorter spelling. His son Samuel seems to have mainly used the Mahorter variation. References
