According to the book, The Alstons and Allstons of North and South Carolina, p. 176: He was a lay reader in the P.E. Chruch and gr. son of Judge Samuel Spencer who was Colonel in the Revolutionary Army and bore a conspicouus part in the history of North Carolina during that period.
