Gridley, Samuel, Jr., Farmington. Invt. £199-08-11. Taken April 1714, by John Wadsworth and Daniel Andrews Sen.

Court Record, Page 193─3 May 1714: Ruth Gridley of Farmington, widow, relict of Samuel Gridley of Farmington, Jr., decd. exhibited in this Court the last will and testament of the sd. Decd., and moved to have the same approved and allowed. Thomas Gridley of Farmington, brother of the said decd., objected against the probate thereof, whereupon this Court deferred a further hearing and consideration thereof until the first Monday of June next. And the sd. Ruth Gridley exhibited an invt. of sd. estate, which inventory is ordered to be recorded and kept on file.

Page 197─7 June 1714: Ruth Gridley of Farmington appeared now and prosecuted her former motion viz., for the probate of a writing (by her) pretended to be the last will and testament of her last husband, Samuel Gridley, late of Farmington, Jr., decd. This Court having considered the several pleas for and against the sd. will, are of the opinion that the same is illegal and don’t contain the mind of the testator when of sound memory, and therefore do disallow and not approve the same. The sd. Ruth Gridley being disatisfied with this resolve, appealed therefrom unto the Superior Court to be holden at Hartford for the County of Hartford on the third Tuesday of September next, and the sd. Ruth Gridley acknowledged herself bound in a recog. of £10."

"Gridley's will was dated 22 Feb. 1713/4 but was disallowed, and inventory was taken in April 1714. Ruth was to appeal to the Superior Court for Hartford Co. on the third Tuesday of Sept. 1714. Superior Court records have not been searched, but the appeal was apparently successful because in a deed of 11 Dec. 1728. which referred to Samuel's will, 'Ruth Brownson, widow of Farmington, who was wife to … Samuel Gridley,' gave land to the dau. Jerusha, now wife of Nehemiah Lewis."
