James Elliot was the son of Samuel Elliott, who came from Beverly and was probably a descendent of Andrew Elliot who died in 1704, age 76. Samuel was a shoemaker who sold his house and land in Beverly in January 1733 and married Hannah Hodgkins of Gloucester on 20 March 1733. He lived near Poles, in Gloucester, and had several children, including Andrew [brother of James], who lived on or near his father's farm and died in 1821, aged 81, having married a Virginia woman who died in the workhouse in 1825, aged 88. James Elliot died while still young of small pox, and his wife Martha Day Elliot and 3 sons (James, Samuel, William) were left in low circumstances. They soon moved to New Salem, MA. Of James and Martha's sons, James became a lawyer, settled in Brattleborough, VT, was a representative in Congress from VT for four years,
