Samuel Dearmer was baptised on 5th September 1830 at Great Wymondley in Hertfordshire, son of a labourer called William Dearmer and his wife Sarah. The family lived at Titmore Green, a hamlet a mile or so south of the village. Samuel appears in the 1841 census living with his parents and siblings at Titmore Green. The family was still there in 1851, by which time Samuel's father had died and Samuel was working as an agricultural labourer.
Samuel was married at Great Wymondley on 1st July 1854, aged 23, to Alice Worbey. They went on to have ten children together between 1855 and 1875. The first two children were baptised at Great Wymondley, with the family's abode in 1857 being given as Titmore Green. They then moved to the neighbouring parish of St Ippolyts some time between 1857 and 1859, with their abode there in 1859 being given as Almshoe Wood House. From at least 1861 to 1865 the family lived at Harkins Hall in St Ippolyts, appearing there in the 1861 census.
Some time between 1865 and 1867 the family moved into the nearby town of Hitchin, living at Bunyan Road, just north of the town centre. They stayed at Bunyan Road between at least 1867 and 1875, then moved some time between 1875 and 1881 to Nightingale Road, a short distance from Bunyan Road. Despite now living in the town, Samuel continued to work as an agricultural labourer.
Samuel died in 1889, aged 58. Alice survived him by about seventeen years.
