Came with his parents to Oskaloosa in 1853. Wrote Sherman’s March to the Sea while he was a prisoner of war and it was smuggled out and put to music. He later escaped and rejoined the Union Army. He spent 20 years in various diplomatic positions in Europe and wrote poetry and prose throughout his entire life.
