Notes Caldwell County, Missouri History 1994 Page 22-23 BUTTS-PENNY Submitted by Donna Mae Stephens Fannie C. Penny, daughter of James S. and Janetta Fortune Penny and granddaughter of John and Frances Penny of Lawrenceburg, Ky., was born December 10, 1839, and passed away November 10, 1922. She married Samuel Jesse Butts, who was born January 27, 1834, and passed away December 10, 1880. Both are buried in Cottage Grove Cemetery near Cowgill, as were her parents James S. and Janetta F. Penny. The birth and death dates of Jesse Butts are all that's known to us of his family history. Jessie and Fannie had five daughters; Hattie, Octavia Elizabetha, Nannie, Sally and Bryda. Octavia was 13 years old when her father died of pneumonia. The family then moved to Hamilton. Some years later Fannie married William McWilliams, known to grandchildren and great grandchildren as "Grandpa Mac." They lived in what was then west Hamilton. Fannie was a practicing midwife, a staunch Primitive Baptist, on who firmly believed and often remarked, "Children should be seen and not heard." The oldest daughter, Hattie married George Pollard who was a Primitive Baptist preacher. They had 11 children, two of who died in infancy. One son was also a Primitive Baptist preacher. They lived on a farm near Independence and all nine children established their homes in or near Independence. Octavia Elizabetha known as "Tavey" and "Aunt Tay" married Charles Sackman and their family history is written in the Sackman family history. Nannie Butts married Jeff Thompson and lived in Hamilton. They had one daughter, Grace who married Earl Hauser of Polo. Nannie was killed, December 10, 1915, when a train struck the car in which she was riding on the way to her mother's home for a family dinner in honor of the mother's birthday. The railroad track bordered the yard of the family home and the accident was witnessed by some of the family gathered there. The driver, her brother-in-law, Early Burdick was injured in the accident. Sally Butts married John Thompson, brother of Jeff Thompson. Byrda Butts married Early Burdick of Polo. They had two sons, Guy and Harry. They also provided a home for their niece, Grace Thompson, after her mother's death and until her marriage to Earl Hauser. Their son, Guy, married Connie Lewellen and had four children: John Early of Hamilton, Lorene (Mrs. Cliff Pollard) of Lathrop, Ralph of Polo and Marjorie (Mrs. Dennis Pollard). Their son, Harry, married Drew Jacobs of Richmond. They have two daughters, Mary Ann (Simmerell) and Joan. |
