Facts and Events
Samuel Barrick was the son of Henry Barrick and Margaret Keller born in 1789 in Frederick County Maryland. Christened on the 3rd of September 1789 in Frederick County, Maryland. Samuel was on the Muster Roll of Maryland Militia 1813. Samuel was a Cabinet maker. Samuel married Nancy Ann Rice, daughter of James Rice and Catherine Dern, on 21 October 1813 in Frederick County, Maryland. Samuel and Nancy had 2 daughters: Harriet Ann Barrick born 1814 and married Henry Blaire. Catherine Ann Elizabeth Barrick "KittyAnn" born 1817 and married first to William Kinkead, then married Robert Gates. Nancy died before the 1820 census in Frederick County, Maryland. Samuel appears alone with 2 young daughters in Frederick County, Maryland in 1820.
While in Maryland, Samuel Barrick went bankrupt. His father in law was surety on some of the debts that he defaulted on. This surely made a rift between he and his father in law. When his father in law, James Rice, died in 1829 his will specifically stated that Sophia's inheritance should be held for her by the executor of his will until she needed it for her or her children's needs. His other children were given their inheritance so this shows that he must have had concerns about Samuel spending the money instead of it going to provide for his daughter and grandchildren's needs.
After Samuel's death his youngest and only minor child, Nancy, went to court and tried to obtain her fathers pension and land warrants due to him for his service in the War of 1812. These documents say that Samuel's family bible listed the birth and deaths of 2 wives, births of ten living children, 2 deceased children, 2 living grandchildren, and 2 deceased grandchildren. Listed in these court documents and Samuel's will are, son Samuel J Barrick (executioner), son in law Benjamin Denton (witness, heir and purchaser at sale), daughter Josephine Squires and son in law Henry Squires (heirs, witnesses), daughter Nancy L Barrick. Samuel is buried in Lafayette Indiana at Greenbush Cemetery. His son Samuel J Barrick, grandson Ira Barrick, and daughter in law, Sarah Scott/Barrick/Allen/Brown/Bowden are also buried in the same plot as Samuel Barrick. |
