  3. The Essex Antiquarian article places Samuel between Elizabeth, which it shows "b. 1654", and Pricilla, birth record 25 Dec 1657. This would fit the posted birth range of between 1655 and 1656, except that no explanation is given to provide any authority. The will of John Appleton mentions his two sons, always in the order John & Samuel, so Samuel would appear to be younger than John, who was b. late 1652. Samuel 3d implies he is younger than the Samuel b. 1654. Priscilla is b. 25 Dec 1657, and a brother Joss (or Jose) is born Mar 1660, died Apr 1660. The birth of his first child in 1684 implies he was born by 1662. It is not clear how dates in early 1659, or 1661, or 1662 are ruled out.
