Sam played football at Great Lakes Naval Station and came to Champaign, Il as an athletic supervisor. After his discharge from the Navy, he attended the UI on the GI Bill. He led the Illini in receptions in the 1946 and 1947. His 52 yard interception return for a touchdown lifted Illinois over Michigan, 13 - 9 in the 1946 march to the Rose Bowl. The Illini defeated UCLA 45 - 14 in the Rose Bowl that year. He received a master's degree in education from the UI in 1950 and was an assistant coach for the freshman team under Ray Elliot. He was athletic director and coach at Oregon, IL for one year before he joined Inland Steel Co. He served as superintendent for several mills for Inland Steel. |
