ZAIDAIN, Sam P. of Marina, California, died suddenly of a heart attack at his home on January 3, 2007 after several years of declining health. Sam was born in Convent, Louisiana, and moved to Dayton at the age of 6. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1943 where he was a star athlete in football and basketball. He served three years in the U.S. Marine Corps, 6th Marine Division, Recon Co., where he participated in the invasion of Okinawa, with a final assignment to China to occupy Tsingtao and accept the Japanese surrender there. Sam went on to earn his Bachelor of Sciences degree in Education from the University of Dayton, earning additional graduate credits from Wright State and Central State Universities. He was a teacher at Northridge High School for 27 years, teaching grades 7 through 12 in many subjects, and coaching tennis, basketball and football. After moving to California, Sam taught for 8 years in the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District where he first substituted at all schools, then taught and coached full time until retirement. Beginning in 1950, while he worked toward his degree and all through his teaching career in Ohio, Sam spent the next 30 years working for the City of Dayton, first as a community center and playground director, then as Assistant Athletic Director for the City of Dayton, and, finally, as Supervisor of Swimming Pools for the city.
Sam was preceded in death by his daughter Michel, son Kyle, and brothers Leon, Alfred, and Faris, and sister Agnes (Kucharski). He is survived by his wife, Eva (Walters) of Marina, CA, brother Philip Zaidain and wife Elizabeth (Walters), sister Annabelle Carroll, all of Dayton, daughter-in-law, Kim P. (Schwarzlose) Zaidain, grandson Harry Zaidain, and granddaughter Genny Zaidain of Half Moon Bay, CA, sisters-in-law Helen (Minham) Zaidain and Virginia (Sawaya) Zaidain of Dayton and many beloved nieces and nephews.
His ashes have been interred in Willowview Cemetery on Neff Rd. in Northridge. According to Sam's wishes, no formal services have been held.
