She might have been adopted (whether legally or informally) by William Black who was shot and killed in Texas in 1915 (as suggested by at least one Ancestry Public Tree). A Miss Black is mentioned in the newspaper article about the shooting[8] - possibly this was her.

  9. Her surname in the record of her marriage to David Bergenham was Black, and if the 1920 census record is the correct one, she was claiming to be single and using the surname Black in 1920. The only explanation I've seen is that she was adopted by a man named William Black (who died in 1915) - no sources to support this.
