Facts and Events
Sabina Murray was named after her aunt, Sabina Shanley. Sabina met her husband, Harry Martin, who worked at her father's furniture store laying linoleum and carpeting. Sabina suffered from severe high blood pressure. Her brother-in-law, Bob Beyers, a doctor, said that when he took her blood pressure, the reading went up so fast that her blood pressure was higher than what his blood pressure cuff could measure. Sabina went to a clinic for several days or a week and they put her on an all rice diet. This is all she was able to eat for several years. She was able to have milk only if she became ill. On November 21, 1955, just before Thanksgiving, Sabina was home alone in the basement doing laundry when she suffered a massive stroke. Unable to walk or speak, she crawled up the stairs and outside through the deep snow to the neighbors home. She was only able to scratch on the door. Her neighbor happened to be washing windows in the kitchen and noticed Sabina. She dragged her into the living room and put a blanket over her and called her mother Jessie, who lived across the street. Betty Smith (who told this story) was visiting her mother at the time. This was around noon. Jessie was unable to deal with people who were very ill. Betty ran over to the neighbors home. Sabina was still conscious and could understand what Betty was saying. She kept pointing to her wedding ring. At first Betty thought the ring was bothering her, but then figured out that Sabina wanted her to get in touch with Harry. Betty called her father to get in touch with Harry who worked at a mill in Etna. Harry was out to lunch at the time. Betty rode with her sister to the hospital in the ambulance. When the hospital workers transferred her to the guerney to transport her inside, the blood clot in her head must have shifted and Sabina lost consciousness and never regained it. Harry and the children who still lived at home (Pat, DeChantal, and Dave) came to visit her that afternoon, but never Sabina had already lost consciousness. She died that evening at 7:00. References
