Ruth Smith McDonald Pevler, 95, formerly of Fostoria, died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2006, at her daughter's home in North Canton. She was born Sept. 9, 1910, to the late Webb and Essie (Havens) Smith in Jackson Township, Sandusky CO. Ruth married Gayle D. McDonald. She then married Omer Pevler who preceded her in death. Surviving are two children, Douglas G. (Sally) McDonald of Tiffin and Judith Ann (Dennis) McDonald Huffman of North Canton; a brother, Webb S. Smith; and a sister, Marjorie Ann Smith, both of Fostoria. Nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren also survive. She is preceded in death by her parents; husbands; and son, David McDonald, who died in 1999; and brothers, Lawrence and Homer Smith. Ruth graduated from Jackson Burgoon High School in Sandusky CO. Ruth was a homemaker and a teacher. She attended Wooster College and later graduated from Bowling Green State University with a B.S. and master's degree in education. She taught for eight years at Beech Grove, a one-room school in Seneca CO. She taught first grade, remedial reading and was an elementary principal at Risingsun Elementary School. She spent two years working with the State Department of Education as a field worker for 17 counties in northwest OH for the "Right to Read" program. She then retired in 1973. Ruth was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Fostoria. She is a past president and 50-year member of Alpha Sigma chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. Ruth was a 25-year member of Chapter 194 Order of the Eastern Star-Newtown, Ind., and also was a member of ORTA, SCRT and NRTA. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, 2006, at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Fostoria with the Rev. Dr. Brian Jones, officiating. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Friday Feb. 24, 2006, at the Harrold-Floriana Funeral Home in Fostoria and one hour prior to the services at the church on Saturday. Memorial contributions may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church in Fostoria, Hayes Memorial United Methodist Church in Fremont or to Aultman Hospice in Canton. References
