    Ruth Lucille Shafer Crumrine of Belmont Tower, Brethren Care Village, Ashland, OH, died on Wed. morning July 30, 2014 just 2 days after she hosted and enjoyed a family celebration that included a wedding shower and a baby shower.

    Ruth was born on the family farm near Jeromesville, OH on July 13, 1916 to Mabel and Milton Shafer.

    She graduated from Jeromesville High School in 1933 and from Ashland College in 1937. After taking additional courses at Ohio State University and later at Baldwin-Wallace College, she taught Home Economics, Science, and Math in Ashland, Plainfield, Perrysville, Jeromesville, Polk, and Mapleton Schools. She was a life member of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association.

    She married John S. Crumrine in her parent's home in Ashland on June 11, 1942. She loved to garden, sew, host family dinners and stay in touch with scores of relatives, friends, and former students across the country.

    She was a member of the First Christian Church, Past President of the Christian Women's Fellowship, and served on the Bereavement and Outreach Committee for many years.

    She was a Scout leader for Ashland Girl Scout Troop #1. During World War II, while her husband was serving in the Navy, she was an analytical chemist at a paper mill near Cantonment, FL and later drew weather maps.

    She is survived by: a son, David (wife-Sheila) Crumrine of Skokie, IL, a daughter, Ann (husband-Woodfin) Ligon of Farmville, VA; grandchildren Paul (wife-Kelly and great grandchild expected in October) Crumrine of Chicago, IL, John E. Crumrine of Evanston, IL, Thomas C. Ligon (Fiancee- Ruthann Dorn) of Herndon, VA, Claire W. Ligon of Culpeper, VA, step-grandchildren Graham (Jennie) Honda of Seattle, WA, and Ethan (Stefanie) Honda of Vienna, VA; step-great-grand-daughter Laurel Honda; first cousin, Charlotte Landis of Orville; a number of nieces, nephews and their families; and many dear friends and former students.

    She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 61 years, John, in April 2004, her sister, Nada Schweyer, in September 2004, her brother, Arthur Shafer, in August 1998, her parents, and a number of cousins.

    Visiting hours will be 9:30 am to 12:30 Saturday August 2 with a service to follow at 1:00 pm at the Heyl Funeral Home, 227 Broad St. Ashland, OH. Burial will be in the Ashland Cemetery after the service.

    Memorial contributions may be made to the John S. Crumrine Family Scholarship fund at Ashland University, the First Christian Church, or Brethren Care. An online register book will be available for family and friends to express condolences at Heyl Funeral Home.
