    Rufus Hopkins, son of Samuel (2) Hopkins, was born in 1773. He was one of the pioneers manufacturers of cotton goods in this part of Rhode Island and operated a mill in the town of Exeter for many years. Later he removed to Coventry, where his death occurred at a great age. He married Amey Shippee, and they were the parents of nine children, as follows: Phebe, Layton, Halsey, David, mentioned below; Elizabeth, Mercy, Samuel, Cynthia, and Polly.
