Knotts Slayer Gets 18 Years in Penitentiary After being convicted of second degree murder, Enoch Scaggs, slayer of Roy Knotts, of Minnora, this county, was sentenced to serve a term of eighteen years in the state penitentiary at Moundsville by Judge Naaman Jackson, of the Logan county circuit court Thursday of last week. Scaggs, aged 50, was convicted the week previously by a jury summoned from Monroe county. Roy C. Knotts, victim of the gunman, was a prominent citizen of Minnora, this county, was serving as chief of police of Logan at the time of his murder. He was approached in a Logan poolroom by Scaggs, who without warning fired five bullets into Knotts' body. Mrs. M.S. Gherke, of this place, and Miss Virginia Knotts, of Minnora, attended the hearing in Logan. They were given a bodyguard of state policemen upon their arrival in Logan city, and like protection was offered lawyers who prosecuted the case. Among counsel for the prosecution was Attorney General Howard B. Lee, of Charleston, sent to Logan by Governor Conley, and Judge Robert Bailey, of Logan. Scaggs was granted a stay of ninety days pending an appeal to the state supreme court, and is confined in the Cabell county jail, bail having been refused by Judge Jackson. References
