He died of an embolism trying to pass thru his heart. The embolism had formed after the second surgery to cut perforated ulcers out of his stomach. Dr. Schmacher was the doctor. He was a well-known surgeon during that time. He later specialized in heart surgery at St. Vincents Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana.

He died at Robert Long Hospital in Indianapolis (now a part of Indiana University)

He had a long history of ulcers. He suffered from ulcers for many years before they finally perforated. This information from Carolyn Brooks his daughter.
