Paw Davis was a tall man to me when I knew him, even though he had a very pronounced dowagers hump. Well, I thought it was a dowagers hump anyway. Seems he had always had it to some degree, and he didn't know why he had it, or what had caused it. He had the biggest hands of any person I have ever known! When we got in trouble, we all hoped it was his belt he came after us with, and not his hand! Those big old hands could do some major damage to a rear end! He was one of the best story tellers of all time. He had a raspy, wheezy laugh that was so contageous, that, even if the story was only kind of funny, if he got tickled while he was telling it, everyone in the room would be rolling on the floor laughing so hard by the end of it. How I wish one of us would have had the presence of mind to record some of those stories! He and Granny lived on Kelty's Loop right across the street from Owens Illinois where he worked. Kelty's Loop was a black sand drive. We, the grand kids, would sit out on the front porch steps and wait to see him trudging up that drive wearing his silver hard hat, khaki shirt and pants, and big black boots and carrying that old black lunch pail. We would all run out to meet him, and 'ride his feet home. Guess it was good that his hands and feet were so big or there wouldn't have been room for all of us to 'ride' at once. When I think back now, of how tired he must have been after working so hard all day ... he must have really loved us to have put up with us hanging all over him like that. I also remember how lonely he was after Granny died. He was still fun to be around, but the spark was gone, and never came back quite like it was before. He and Granny used to clean the church building at Fourth and Groesbeck Church of Christ. I can remember many a summer afternoon going to the church building with them to clean it. Our job was to run through all the pews collecting the used, half empty communion glasses. Then we'd take them to the back and empty them (which consisted of pouring the used ones down the drain and drinking any unused ones!). Then while they vaccumed, swept, and washed and refilled the communion trays, we were free to run around and play in that big old empty building. Everyone should be so lucky as we were as kiddos! Paw loved to travel and had always wanted to fly, but Granny was afraid of planes, so he never got to board an airplane.
