Listed in the 1910 United States Federal Census; Alabama Etowah County; District 73, Warrior; Page 10 family #4;;; Nix, Nannie, head of house, age 37, children 6/6, ; Jethro, son age 21, single; Fannie age 16; Rosa age 14: Mary, age 12.

The census information confirms all that I have currently entered for the mother and these four children. Ages match DoD's that I currently have, and the fact that she is a widow confirms David S. Nix's DoD of 1888. Finding her living next to Daniel, who was the father of her husband is also reasonable. But two children are missing and cause concern. Eula D. is missing from the home in 1990, I have her DoB as mar 1883, which is prior to the parents marriage date. I assume that I typed the date in error, ie 1883 when it should be 1893. That DoB would match all other facts and still make her 17 and possibly married and away from the home on 1910. The other problem is Joseph Edward (Joe) Nix, not at home. But if all my dates are correct he would have been 20 and possible married.

This census would have her birth day abour 1895. Note that by the time of her death the SSDI has her three years younger. The 1910 census has her only one year younger, ie 34, but this difference could be accounted for by the actual date of the Census and the rules for determining age for that census year.

FROM INSTRUCTIONS FOR 1930; The date of the enumeration appears on the heading of each page of the census schedule. All responses were to reflect the individual's status as of 1 April 1930 (or 1 October 1929 for Alaska), even if the status had changed between the official start date and the day of enumeration. Children born between the official start date and the day of enumeration were not to be listed, while individuals alive on the official start date but deceased when the enumerator arrived were to be counted.

The official start date was 1April, actual enumeration date for this sheet was 18 April, and instruction was date as of last birthday on official start date. So the questionwould have been "As of the first of April this year (1930), How old were you on your last birth day?" If the SSDI( date is correct the answer should have been 33 years old, but I think this exercise shows how easy it would be to get mixed up.
