I believe she was the daughter of Amos Besse and Ellen Sprague.

 As George is also shown marrying Rose Crisman, I think it is possible she was briefly married to a Crisman, possibly to a brother of Frank P. Crisman who married George's sister Martha.
 In the 1880 census for Prairie Green, Iroquois Co., Illinois, Amos Bessie is 40 born Illinois (parents NY), farmer; with wife Elen 38 NY (parents same); and children Addie 15; Rosa 13; Fany 9; Clayton 7; and Clary 7 -- all born Illinois. Andrew Winings, 25 IL, is a farmer.  {Page 349C}
 There are marriage records for Addie Arbilla Besse m. Thomas E. McClean in 1885 (same day as Rose), Clara M. Besse m. Charles R. Scott in 1892 and Fannie A. Besse m. Albert T. Newburn in 1892 -- all in Iroquois Co; and for Clayton R. Besse m. Iora Bird in 1899 in Vermillion Co., Illinois.
 In the 1910 census for Carrollton, Carroll Co., Indiana, Rosa E. Shankland is 43, born Illinois (father IL, mother New York) widowed, with 4 of 5 children living, farmer; with children Ina A. 23; Bernard 19; (Allerse?) P. 17; and Ross L. 15 -- all born Illinois, single.  {ed 27, sh 12b, p. 42}
 In the 1920 census for Carrollton, Rose E. is listed as mother in the household of Ross L. Shankland and family. A. P. Shankland, 26 farmer, is listed with wife Mary and daughter Jean in Washington township. There is a Bernard C. Shankland, 29 IL (KY, IL), teacher in high school, listed in Cadillac, Wexford Co., Michigan.
 In the 1930 census for Carrollton, there is a listing for 'Ross E. Shankland', 'mother', b. 1868 with Ina A. 1888. Ross is also listed in Carrollton with family and Allearse is listed in Cass Co., Indiana.

The daughter of Amos and Ellen Sprague Besse, she was born June 29, 1867, in Illinois. On Feb. 12, 1885, she was married to George L. Shankland. He preceded her in death on Sept. 4, 1904. She was a member of the Deer Creek United Brethren Church. Surviving are: a daughter, Ina Shankland, Wheeling; three sons, Bernard, Cadillac, Mich.; Allerse, California , and Ross, Kokomo; a brother, Clayton Besse, Clayton, Mo., and sister, Mrs. S.W. Murray, Ambia, Ind. Burial will be made in the Floral Hill cemetery at Hoopston, IL."  {Carroll Co. Indiana Message Board, 24 Mar 2004, <www.rootsweb.com>} NOTE: No date mentioned for obituary. Her parents are also buried in Floral Hill Cemetery. {Findagrave}
 There is a reference to Allearse Porter Shankland, son of George and Rose Crisman Shankland, who married Mary Elizabeth Zinn in 1914 in Carroll Co. Indiana. {History and genealogy of the Zinn family: unknown, 1937, <www.heritagequest.com>, 23 Aug 2007}
 There is a notice of a marriage between Ross Shankland and Susie Flora in 1913. {<http://www.rootsweb.com/~incarrol/newspaperclippings/weddings2.html>}
 I believe Bernard may be the Bernard Shankland who married Esther Iverson (1900-1990) in Michigan before 1925, and had children Alfred, Richard, and George. He died in 1978. {'Descendants of Jonathon Hunt', by Duane Hunt, updated May 2007, WorldConnect database, <www.rootsweb.com>, 26 Jan 2009} He is listed in the SSDI as living in Wexford.
 There is an Ina Shankland listed in SSDI, b. 11 Aug 1886, died Oct 1975 in Monticello, White Co., Indiana.
 Allerse Porter Shankland, b. 29 Mar 1893 IL, died 1959 in Napa Co., California {California Death Index}.
