He was one of the northern-born commercial elite of New Orleans, which included friends such as Paul Tulane. Montgomery made a fortune in hardware with the firm of Richards and Montgomery, amassed extensive real estate holdings in New Orleans and New York, and lived in a gracious home on Burgundy and Canal streets. In 1850 he was president of the Bank of Louisiana and later became head of the Canal and Banking Company of New Orleans.
