    ASTORIA, Ore. -- Roger Allen Berg, 85, of Astoria, Ore., died Aug. 21.

    Services were Aug. 29 in Astoria.

    He was born May 13, 1923, in Willmar to Roy Arthur and Alvina Pearl (Knott) Berg. He grew up in Willmar and graduated from Willmar High School.

    He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1941 and served aboard the USS Morris, where he was one of the survivors of a kamikaze attack in Okinawa, Japan. Following his discharge, he attended the University of Minnesota and graduated with a degree in engineering.

    He married Lorraine Thompson on April 4, 1953, in Sedro-Wooley, Wash. He worked for American Can Company in San Francisco for three years, in Seattle for 16 years and then in Astoria where he retired in 1982.

    He was elected to the Clatsop County Commission and served for eight years. He was active in Peace Lutheran Church, the Rotary Club, Astoria Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the Columbia Memorial Hospital Board.

    He is survived by his wife; three sons: Steve Berg (and Clare Lyons) of Washington, D.C., Gary (and Sue) Berg of Salt Lake City, Greg (and Sherry) Berg of Los Angeles; five grandchildren; two sisters: Joyce Van Rossum of Allyn, Wash., and Betty Dazell of Seattle; and one brother: Roy (and Deanna) Berg of Colorado Springs, Colo.

    He was preceded in death by one sister.
