Edinburgh Newspaper - 1937 "Mr. Colin McKenzie - Death of Well-Known Edinburgh Musician" "Mr. Colin McKnezie, who was well known as a violinist in Edinburgh for a long period of years, died yesterday at his residence, 26 Comely Bank, Edinburgh. Mr. McKenzie who was in his 76th year, was born in Edinburgh. As a young man, Mr. McKenzie was a first rate viola player, and he studied in Frankfurt under Professor Hugo Heerman, where one of his colleagues was the late Mr. A. Scott Jupp, also a well-known Edinburgh musician, and later in Manchester, under Willy Hess. Subsequently he became familiar to the musical public in Edinburgh as a violin soloist, and he gave a great amount of his time and enery to the work of the Edinburgh String Quartet, of which he was the founder. Mr. McKenzie was instrumental in introducing to Edinburgh many hitherto unknown musical works. He was a member of the Reid Orchestra and frequently contributed to the programmes of the B.B.C. His work as a interpreter of viola music was widely appreciated. As a teacher of the violin, he was widely known and respected. For twenty-six years he taught the violin at Fettes College and at a number of leading Edinburgh schools. He frequently acted as an examiner in violin and the periodical examinations for musical diplomas. Mr. McKenzie was one of the best known members of the Scottish Arts Club, where he was a familiar figure. He sustained a considerable shock in the death at Oxford a few weeks ago of his sone, who was an authority on a number of classical and ancient Asiatic languages, and who for some time had been engaged on erudite works of this nature."
