Evidently named for the protagonist of the picaresque novel "The Adventures of Roderick Random" by Tobias Smollett, 1748. Smollett translated Don Quixote and Gil Blas.

In the novel, the Roderick Random character is the son of an English gentleman and a lower class woman.
