Note: Many trees (and Wikipedia as of Aug 2021) identify him as the son of John de Waterton (his brother), due to what appears to be a simple mistake in J.W. Walker's well-researched article on the family[4].

Robert Waterton (c. 1360 – 17 January 1425) was a trusted servant of the House of Lancaster under three monarchs, Henry IV, Henry V, and Henry VI. As Constable of Pontefract Castle, he had custody of Richard II after that king was deposed.

On page 368, Walker calls Robert Waterton, the "third son of John Waterton of Waterton". However, this is the only place he identifies him as such and appears to be a simple mistake - he surely meant to say "third son of William Waterton of Waterton."
On page 357, Walker states that William Watertown had four sons by his wife Elizabeth Newmarch: John, Hugh, Robert, Thomas, and one daughter, Catherine.
On page 362, Walker states that John de Waterton [son of William] had two sons, Jerome and John (both of whom predeceased him without issue), and that he left two daughters, Eleanor and Mundane. There is no mention of a son Robert.
On page 370, Walker states that Robert Waterton "accompanied his brother Sir Hugh Waterton ..."

  5. 5.0 5.1 Both Wikipedia and Find A Grave (likely following Wikipedia) say he died 17 Jan 1424/25. However, J.W. Walker (Yorkshire Archaeological Journal 30:384) says it was his son Robert who died on that date "when it was found that he died seised of the following manors, being the inheritance of his first wife Joan ...", which would not have applied to this Robert. Walker states on page 382 that this Robert's will was probated 2 Mar 1425 and on page 384 that the son's will was probated 2 Mar 1425, without mentioning that it was the same date as the father's, which makes it possible that he confused father and son. Certainly, the son must have died about 1425, as the son's widow remarried before 7 Feb 1425/26 (YAJ 30:384).
  6. Birth year estimated based on Wikipedia's estimate of his older brother Hugh's birth years (1340) and on the approx. birth year of his daughter-in-law Joan de Everingham (1363).
