Herman, Laura, 3 of their children (Robert, Barbara and Joyce) and Laura's sister, Grace Williams, were killed in an automobile accident in Mansfield, Ohio on their way to visit their relatives in Georgia. Their car was hit by a tractor-trailer and the car burned. They were all buried in Ohio except Grace, who was buried at New Hope (Flinthill) in Fannin County. Helen Turner Farmer, her husband Ernest and infant daughter, Diane, along with Willie, Noel and Lynda Galloway flew to Cleveland, Ohio. A friend of Noel's drove them to Knoxville, TN to catch a plane. During a layover in Cincinati of several hours, Helen saw a newspaper and found out her parents' and siblings' bodies had been burned beyond recognition. She had not been told before, but her reaction at the moment was almost relief that she did not have to view their bodies.
