Robert Letcher Tipton died Wednesday, Apr. 19th of a paralytic stroke. Funeral by the Rev. Elbert Dawson at the burial in Owingsville Cemetery last Thursday. He was born near Irvine, Estill County, Jan. 16, 1822. Married Miss Lou Pieratt, sister of Squire David Pieratt of this county. Surviving children were: James B., Sarah, Mary, Sidney, John M., Lou, Robert Letcher, Grant and Elsie. James and John reside in Mt. Sterling; Sidney, of Lexington; Elsie of near Nicholasville; Mrs. Sarah Cartmill, wife of John Cartmill, on Upper Prickly Ash; Mrs. Mary Pieratt, wife of Jacob Pieratt, west of town; Mrs. Lou Pieratt, widow of William Pieratt; Letcher and Grant live here. The first wife died about 30 years ago. Mr. Tipton married a second time, his wife being Susan Cartmill, daughter of Charles Cartmill of near town. She has been dead about 15 years. Following surviving children of the second marriage were: Alice, wife of Ewell Payne of near Stepstone; Miss Lida, teaching school at Wyoming; and William, Deputy Sheriff of this town. Mr. Tipton came to this town about 42 years ago to follow his trade as a blacksmith. References
