Robert Sutherland, Sr. served in the 42nd Highland Regiment during the American Revolutionary War. He came to New Brunswick in 1783 and settled on the Nashwaak where he received Lot 146 in the Dugan Campbell grant. He and his wife, Elizabeth, arrived in New Brunswick with two children. He died before Oct 24 1807. At this time his widow and sons sold their property, Lot 146, to John Sutherland. RobertSutherland's discharge paper is in the PANB. This paper states that Robert Sutherland was a private in the 42nd Royal Highland Regiment and came from the market town of Wick in the Parish of Latheron. He was a shoemaker by trade and had served eight years. He enlisted December 16, 1775, was ordered to be discharged on June 9, 1783 and was discharged on September 28, 1783 at Paulis Hook, NJ. In 1795 Robert petitioned for more land on the upper Nashwaak and stated he had three sons and one daughter. It has been stated that Robert had children who died of typhoid.
