If a man's value to society were measured by the number of friends he had, then Lt. Bob SPOON would have been in a select group. As news of his death circulated early Saturday, there was disbelief from many varied sources beyond the range of his work with the Police Department. Bob, of course, had many contacts over the years through his police work, but he also held many other interests. Not the least of these was his work with his church, St. Paul's Methodist. He had held a number of high offices in the church including several policy making positions. Athletics also held a high place in his interests, and he was among the most loyal supporters of the Williams High teams over the years. He also took part in the youth athletic programs in the city, over past years, offering whatever he could to the teams sponsored by the Police Boys Club. We had the pleasure of knowing Bob long before he became a police officer. After he joined the force, we often had the opportunity to work closely with him as a reporter assigned to the Police Department. We always carried on a friendly rivalry with him over various athletics. We did not always support the same teams, but the kidding and fun were put aside when there was something serious to be handled. He first served the Police Department as a patrolman, then as a detective sergeant. After his detective work, he moved to head the records operations section. each phase of his work, Bob met many people, and his manner brought the respect of those he encountered. There is no better to describe him and his attitude toward the people involved in his work than "fair." There seems little better compliment that one can pay a police officer than to say that he was fair to all with whom he dealt. It was not his nature to be otherwise. Another great interest for Bob was his family. His wife, VONCILLE, and his daughter, Robbie, and son, Robert, were a source of great pride for him, as he was for them. His absence will be felt, of course, in the work on the local scene, but it will be felt just as strongly in many other areas as well. His wide range of friends will attest to that.
