Robert Eugene Smith,87, of Albia, died early Tuesday morning, Nov. 4, 2008 at the Monroe Care Center in Albia.
Robert was born April 13, 1921, in Albia, Iowa, to Clarence and Fern (Stewart) Smith. Robert married Lois Pauline Post on May 17, 1941 in Unionville, Mo. To this union four children were born.
Robert started farming in 1951 and farmed all his life. Robert also welded for Long and Airdocks in Ottumwa for many years, and also worked at Oskaloosa Engineering before retiring in the late 1980s.
Robert is survived by his four children, Robert Eugene and Betty Smith of Albia, Richard and Florence Smith of Mount Pleasant, Ron and Judy Smith of Centerville and Nancy and Jerry Bonebright of Albia; and close friend, Janice Dicks of Albia. Robert is also survived by 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. Robert is also survived by two brothers, Harold and Ruby Smith of Mesa, Ariz., Russell Smith of Burlington, Iowa; one sister, Virginia and Harold Schnicker of Burlington, Iowa; one sister-in-law, Lucille Bonham of Washington, Iowa.
Robert is preceded in death by his wife Lois; his parents, Clarence and Fern; and one brother; Donald Smith.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 7, 2008 at the Winfield Funeral Home in Albia, with Rev. Richard Grimes officiating.
