Biography
Robert Ashford Smith was born on 9 June 1893 in Rockwood, Roane County, Tennessee, the son of Prof. William Wiley Smith (1848-1924) and Mary Emaline Montgomery (1852-1917). He grew up on the Smith family farm in Rockwood, Tennessee. He registered for the draft in World War I on June 5, 1917 and was listed as age 23, born in Rockwood, Tennessee, a natural born citizen, working in farming, single, caucasian, tall, medium build, with blue eyes and light brown hair on his registration card. He enlisted on 14 Dec 1917 and was discharged on 18 Dec 1918.
Robert attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, TN and majored in Civil Engineering. He married 1st, Willie Rebekah Dickey on 2 August, 1920 in Tennessee. After they married, Robert and Willie (Dickey) Smith lived on the Smith Family farm, where he managed the farm for the Smith family for about 20 years. Robert and Willie had four daughters together: Sarah Elizabeth (Ibbie), Mary Martha (Honey), Margaret Frances (Sugar) and Rachael Carolyn. Unfortunately, a few years after the birth of their youngest daughter, Willie and Robert separated and later divorced. Robert battled alcoholism much of adult life, but it subsided in his later years.
During his separation from his first wife, Robert met and had a relationship with Viola R. Roberts in about 1940, and they had a daughter, Wanda [Roberts] Smith born in abt. 1942. Robert and Viola separated sometime after that, but they reconciled later and were married on 20 September 1968 in Rhea County, Tennessee [Tennessee Marriage Records 1780-2002]. Viola worked as a nurse in a local hospital.
Robert Smith worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority for several years and he died on 13 August 1979 in Roane County, Tennessee. He is buried in Winton's Chapel Cemetery in Roane County, Tennessee, with many of his siblings and relatives. His second wife Viola died about five months later in January 1980.
