Robert Patton was born about 1759, in County Tyrone, Ireland as the son of William Melton Patton. He married Eleanor Gray on 2 April 1797, in Greenbrier, West Virginia, United States. They were the parents of at least 2 sons. He died in 1806, in Monroe, Virginia, United States, at the age of 48.
