Facts and Events
Robert Samm Norman was baptised on 3rd December 1815 at Letchworth in Hertfordshire, son of Elizabeth Samm Norman, formerly Ralphs, and her husband William Norman, a farmer and shopkeeper. Robert was probably named after his maternal grandfather. Some time between 1822 and 1824 the family left Letchworth and moved to the neighbouring village of Willian. In 1824, when Robert was about eight years old, his mother died aged 32, either in childbirth or shortly afterwards. The baby, also called Elizabeth, died six months later. In 1834, when Robert was eighteen years old, his father married again, with his second wife being a widow named Elizabeth Pratt who had eight surviving children from her first marriage. Five years later she died, leaving Robert's father a widower for a second time. The 1841 census finds Robert living at Willian with his father and younger sister Mary Ann. At this time Robert was working as a plait buyer in the local straw plaiting industry. He has yet to be researched after 1841. References
