Facts and Events
Mary Ann Norman was baptised on 1st August 1819 at Letchworth in Hertfordshire, daughter of Elizabeth Samm Norman, formerly Ralphs, and her husband William Norman, a farmer and shopkeeper. Some time between 1822 and 1824 the family moved from Letchworth to the neighbouring village of Willian. In 1824, when Mary was just five years old, her mother died aged 32, either in childbirth or shortly afterwards - and the baby, also called Elizabeth, died six months later. In 1834, when Mary was fourteen years old, her father married again, with his second wife being a widow named Elizabeth Pratt, who had eight surviving children from her first marriage. Elizabeth died five years later, leaving Mary's father a widower for a second time. The 1841 census finds Mary living in Willian with her father, who was now described as a publican, and her brother Robert, who was working as a plait buyer in the local straw plaiting industry. Mary died when she was only 30 years old, being buried at Willian on 5th September 1849. References
