Genealogical and Biographical Record of Decatur County, Ind iana The Lewis Publishing Company, Chicago, 1900 Pages 420-421 [ne: I have a second coversheet for this arti cle citing 1915 by Harding] ROBERT S. MONTGOMERY To be a descendant of pioneers in any locality which has ad vanced to a happy condition of civilization is an honor o f itself. To have been practically a pioneer by having live d in he pioneer period and participated in pioneer experien ces is an added honor. To this double honor Robert S. Montg omery is entitled. His father was a pioneer and his own bir th was early enough to insure its date a place in the earli est history of Decatur County, of whose development he ha s been a lifelong witness. Robert S. Montgomery was born in Decatur County, May 8, 183 1, a son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Bingham) Montgomery. Thom as Montgomery in the paternal line, descended from Irish an cestry. His father, Hugh Montgomery, came to America befor e the Revolutionary War and fought for the independence o f the colonies. Some of the fighting blood in his veins wa s bequeathed to his children, and his sons, Thomas (sic), M ichael (sic) and William served in the last war with Englan d, in which conflict the last mentioned lost his life (sic) . Eva Hartman, a Pennsylvania woman, became the wife of Hug h Montgomery. Thomas was an early settler in Ohio, whence h e removed to Indiana in 1824. In this state he entered larg e tracts of land and was one of the most prominent farmer s in his vicinity. He cleared and improved a farm and live d on it until his death, which occurred in 1846. His life w as that of a Christian, full of good deeds, and in all it s aspects afforded an example worthy of emulation. His chil dren, born in the order indicated, were named as follows (n e: see later compilations for corrections. This is a mix o f eleven of Hugh`s thirteen children, and NOT in their birt h order, in-laws unreliable): Thomas (father of the immedia te subject of this sketch), Henry, Hugh, George, Michael, R obert, Mary (Mrs. Alexander Grant), Elizabeth (Mrs. Thompso n), Sarah (Mrs. J. Martin), Nancy (Mrs. Hineman), and Marga ret (Mrs. Crutchwell). Thomas Montgomery, father of Robert, married Miss Lizzie Bi ngham, daughter of John Bingham, who died in Pennsylvania , leaving her without parents or brothers and sisters and , indeed, without any near relative. She became a member o f a small colony which was destined for the then far west , and which made its way down the Ohio by flat-boat and set tled in Butler County, Ohio. From there some of them came t o Decatur County, Indiana, and Miss Bingham was one of th e party. After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Montgomery settl ed on a piece of land which had been entered by Mr. Montgom ery`s father, and which was eventually improved into a goo d farm, and there Mr. Montgomery passed the remainder of hi s life, dying in 1845. Following are the names of the offsp ring of Thomas and Lizzie (Bingham) Montgomery: Rebecca an d Sarah, who died unmarried, the latter aged ninety-one yea rs; Eva, who became Mrs. A. J. Draper; John B., deceased; H ugh and George, who died in 1851; Martha, who became Mrs. C raig; Thomas who married Sarah A. Gageby and died Novembe r 24, 1874; and Robert S., some account of whose career i t will be attempted now to give. Robert S. Montgomery bought the interest of the other heir s to his father`s estate in the old homestead and has live d on it and managed it successfully during all his active l ife thus far, and has no thought but that he will live on i t to the end of his days. He is a thorough farmer of good b usiness ability. Politically he is a Republican, exertin g a quiet influence upon the local work of his party but ne ver aspiring to any public office. He is not married.
