Biography

Robert Montgomery11 Carroll 1765-1815: The Settlements, By John Perry Alderman; Published by Alderman Books, 1985, p. 56 Robert was described in the will as the eldest son and was born about 1773 in North Carolina, judging from the census and the death register. He married Sarah Hiatt in Guilford, N. C., the marriage bond being dated Jan. 26, 1802. Sarah was the daughter of Joseph and Keziah (Mills) Hiatt, born Sep. 18, 1786 (1 Hinshaw 783). It will be noted that Robert was considerable older than she and married her after her family had moved to Virginia. She was a Quaker girl and was dismissed from the Mt. Pleasant meeting in the summer of 1802 for marrying outside the faith (1 Hinshaw 1011). Robert did not come to Burks Fork until 1813; that year he bought 200 acres of the old Collier farm from his brother-in-law Zachariah Hiatt (Grayson, D. B. 3-228). His brothers William and Erwin had preceded him here. Robert paid tax in 1815 on ten cattle, indicating fairly prosperous circumstances. In time he came to own much of the Collier farm for his father-in-law died in 1826 and in his will left Robert and Sarah another 300 acres. Robert and William were the Hiatt executors (Grayson, W. B. 1-309). There are only a few references to him in the old Grayson records. He still owned all his land when the new County of Carroll was formed in 1842, and in 1848 he and Sarah deeded 436 acres of it in trust for his children (Carroll, D. B. 2-539), and in 1853 he conveyed the rest of it to his unmarried daughter Elmina (Carroll, D. B. 3-696). It is the 1848 deed which serves to enumerate his family. Robert, according to the death register died in Carroll on Oct. 1, 1859 of palsy. His widow Sarah survived him and lived on for years at the home place where for a time, Elmina tried to operate a tavern (Carroll, 1869 census, Household #50). Sarah last appears in the 1870 census, aged 83, and it is thought that she and Robert were buried in the Fruit Hill Cemetery. There were eight children according to the 1848 deed: (1) Hiatt Montgomery, born about 1803, who married Elizabeth Mabry in Grayson in 1823. He lived in Floyd County for many years but returned to Carroll in the 1850s. (2) Martha Montgomery, born about 1806, married Jesse Hylton in Grayson in 1824. She died in the 1840s and was the only child referred to in the 1848 deed as deceased. (3) Ruth Montgomery, born about 1810, was Gordon Hylton’s second wife; they married in Carroll in 1846. (4) Irwin Montgomery, born about 1811, married Lovicy Davis in Grayson in 1833; he died in Carroll in 1865. (5) Zachariah Montogomery, born in 1816, lived near Woodlawn in Carroll. He married Mary Catherine Hale in Montgomery County in 1839. (6) George Montgomery, dates not known, apparently left the county. (7) Nathan Montgomery, like George, is not otherwise identified. (8) Elmina Montgomery, born about 1827, did not marry until 1883 when she was to wed Hiram Duncan, a widower from Floyd County.
